Great Turn-out for LinkedIn Live Philadelphia

LinkedIn Live Philadelphia
Steve Lubetkin of Professional Podcasts took this great photo at last week's LinkedIn Live Philadelphia. Ed Steinberg of LinkedIn speaks at Rembrandt's in Philadelphia as Ed Callahan, Safiya Edwards, and Oliver Picher look on. We had about 100 people turn out. Thanks to Geoff Rhine for making it happen.

As an example of how former co-workers can be a valuable part of your overall network, and you just never know where they will turn up, Ed "Crazy Eddie" Steinberg and I know one another from Synygy.

This Week in Philadelphia (TWIP) for 5-18

If you ever attended a Mobile Monday Mid-Atlantic get-together, you will come away amazed at the vibrance and creativity of Philadelphia's mobile developer community. Of course, the folks that attend are all true believers in the future of mobile ("...by the year 2020, the use of mobile computing in health care will extend average life spans by 20 to 25 years"), but the enthusiasm is infectious. This month's Mobile Monday is, as you might guess, on Monday.

Speaking of creatively going mobile, Innovation Philadelphia is also sponsoring the Creative Movement Conference on Thursday -- the creative economy in action. Philadelphia has a vibrant creative economy, and Innovation Philadelphia is doing a bang-up job of getting people to recognize it.

This Week in Philadelphia (TWIP) for 5-11

Monell Chemical Senses Center
Among the more unusual events coming up this week is a luncheon meeting lecture on underarm pheromones. There seems to be a new multimedia exhibit on smells and pheromones at the University City Science Center, sponsored by the Monell Chemical Senses Center, which has inspired the Philadelphia Public Relations Association (PPRA) to hold an odor-related networking cocktail party in early June. This gives me an opportunity to use one of my most favorite photos of all time, which I've managed to find on the web, for your enjoyment. And, believe it or not, this is what they do (or did) at the Monell Center.

I must admit, this does add some interesting wrinkles for networking. Research shows that pheromones and our sense of smell play a much larger role in our interactions with people than we realize. I can see a whole series of seminars and books on how to organize your "elevator whiff" to make a better first impression on the people you meet, or maybe LinkedIn will add an electronic "scratch and sniff" swatch to its profile page.

Speaking of LinkedIn, please join me on Tuesday at the Philly LinkedIn Live event, where I will be on a panel of people speaking on LinkedIn. To find out where, and to register to attend, go to my LinkedIn profile, click on the icon for the LI Live -- Philly group, and join the group.

There are lots of other great events to tickle your nose, on referral marketing, young professionals, entrepreneurship, young entrepreneurship, the business climate in Philadelphia, and a fair amount of bowling, golfing, mixing, persuading, connecting, accelerating, breakfasting, brown-bagging, and partying.

This Week in Philadelphia (TWIP) for 5-4

More of the golden day
I'm told that this year May 8 is Akshaya Tritiya, which I first heard translated as the Day of Lasting Achievement. I've also seen it described as the Golden Day of Eternal Success. According to Hindu belief, long-term plans and especially meaningful activities undertaken on this day will be especially fruitful.

What better reason for you to start working on that idea you had kicking around in the back of your mind all this time. Call someone, share your idea, and ask if they can help make it happen.
