This Week in Philadelphia (TWIP) for 1-24

I don't usually cover Chamber of Commerce events, but there were a few that looked interesting this week, so I've included them. Mobile Monday's annual DEMO night is worth a look for those in the tech or communications fields. BioNJ is having its annual dinner, and BioBreak is having its quarterly networking gathering, both at the same time I think, for those in the life sciences field. The Sustainable Business Network is also holding its annual meeting.

Not sure this counts as a business meeting, but the Franklin Institute is having a life-sized Operation tournament to highlight the BodyWorlds exhibit. This is just a scaled-up version of the kids game, in case you were wondering.

This Week in Philadelphia (TWIP) for 1-17

I've been seeing a lot about a group called Whine and Dine lately -- there are several meetings around the area this week, which is why I mention them.  They are HR-focused, but it seems like an interesting concept.  Not sure I like the whining, but the dining sounds like it makes for a relaxed atmosphere.

I'd never heard of them until recently, but I'm always interested in learning about new groups.  Drop me a comment if there is a group I'm not covering that you think should be mentioned.

Here's what's happening this week around the Philadelphia area:

This Week in Philadelphia (TWIP) for 1-10

The future is hazy...

A lot of economic and industry outlooks happening this week, to get your thoughts churning on your plans for the year.

You are making plans for what you want to accomplish this year, aren't you? As much as I find it difficult to do, I've always found it worthwhile to assess the past year, think about what I want to accomplish by the end of the coming year, and start taking concrete steps (such as networking your way to the people you need to meet) to making it happen.

This Week in Philadelphia (TWIP) for 1-4

Welcome back, and welcome to the New Year. I hope your New Year's resolution is to get out and make more connections. It will definitely pay off for you, in ways you may not expect.

I was reading in today's Inquirer on how people who use social networking sites are more connected in the real world than people who don't:

Just what do we mean by staying in touch? The Pew study let participants define it. Hampton describes the method: " 'Give us a list of names,' we said, 'of people you consider to be especially significant in your life,' and social-media users had bigger lists."

Well, I don't know about bigger lists necessarily being better, but it did get me thinking about who is especially significant in my life right now. In my business life, by and large those are people I've met as a result of networking (and I do keep up with a lot of them via social media). The starting point -- the initial splashes -- for a lot of these significant relationships happened during events I attended in 2007! The ripples from those splashes keep expanding and interconnecting. I think my New Years resolution is to go make more ripples.

Here are some of the things going on this week:

Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce -- Congressional Reception

Greater Valley Forge Human Resource Association -- Culture Sleuthing

Construction Financial Management Association Seminar -- Employee Fraud

The Business Center for Entrepreneurship and Social Enterprise -- Open House
