This Week in Philadelphia (TWIP) for 1-4

Welcome back, and welcome to the New Year. I hope your New Year's resolution is to get out and make more connections. It will definitely pay off for you, in ways you may not expect.

I was reading in today's Inquirer on how people who use social networking sites are more connected in the real world than people who don't:

Just what do we mean by staying in touch? The Pew study let participants define it. Hampton describes the method: " 'Give us a list of names,' we said, 'of people you consider to be especially significant in your life,' and social-media users had bigger lists."

Well, I don't know about bigger lists necessarily being better, but it did get me thinking about who is especially significant in my life right now. In my business life, by and large those are people I've met as a result of networking (and I do keep up with a lot of them via social media). The starting point -- the initial splashes -- for a lot of these significant relationships happened during events I attended in 2007! The ripples from those splashes keep expanding and interconnecting. I think my New Years resolution is to go make more ripples.
